Another Banner Day at Stump Lane

March 29, 2006

Yesterday we had 260 visits. This time, though it was because of spammers. Let me just address one of you, Mr. “Poker Casino,” if that’s even your real name, not one of your 288 comments got through to the site yesterday. Nor will they ever. So suck my ass, asshead.

If anybody knows anything about such things is watching, what is the best solution for comment spam? I currently moderate all comments from first time commenters, which works, but the process has become a nuisance thanks to shitbirds like Poker Casino, and She Got Tired of Texas Hold ‘Em. Should we employ word verification, or some kind of filter? (I fear a filter might also erroneously stop legitimate comments.)

Any feedback will be appreciated.

That’s a toughie. Obviously, the word verification thing sucks, but I don’t know of any other way. Haloscan does a good job filtering, as I haven’t had to delete a comment yet. Their free service is pretty no-frills, though.

6 of one, half-dozen of the other, I guess.

The Poker Casino comments subsided, and we are back to normal. I don’t want to do the word verification thing, but if I could target the WV only at ‘first time’ commenters, so I could turn off moderation, it might be worth a try. I’ll look in to it… sometime.
