Whoopie!

February 1, 2011

MEANWHILE IN MAINE, lawmakers are debating a bill to name whoopie pies the official state dessert. This is just absurd. Obviously blueberries should be the state dessert when you really look at it.

But blueberry growers are reluctant to oppose the whoopie pie bill, said David Bell, executive director of the Wild Blueberry Commission of Maine.

“We just don’t want to start a food fight,” he said. [Kennebec Journal]

We’ve made the argument before. The whoopie pie should instead be named state bird.

I hear ya. Whoopie pies are just a sweet counterpoint to cheese doodles. Blueberries? Well, they grow in my yard, down the road, up the road, pretty much anywhere I choose to go.

Odd that I found this blog via Cleveland (Randal). I hail from Acton, Maine

And the world closes in on me a little more.

the criticism of blueberries is that they are a fruit, not a desert. so i’d be happy to make blueberry cobbler, or pie, or muffins the state desert.

great to hear from another Mainer!

Well, neither is the whoopie pie a dessert. Rather, it ought to be named the State Chemical Cake. Goes well with the unofficial State Chemical Drink, Moxie.
