I Vote For Anarchy

August 22, 2008

Ballot
I vote for anarchy.

“YES, LET’S end participatory democracy with a final vote, and slip once and for all into organic chaos with faith in the cooperative nature of man.” –Fehlleistungen [Sardonically.]

Don’t be mistaken, my friend, there is very little faith on my part in “the cooperative nature of man.” The seemingly natural tendency towards the formation of larger and larger cooperative combinations, eventually leading to global capitalist tyranny, is something I find disturbing. We should probably just tear the whole fucking thing down and start over every once in a while is all I’m saying.

I’m such a sardon. Hey: what’s that Ray Bradbury story in which a planet with two suns only experiences total darkness every 400 years or so; when this happens, the occupants of the planet see the panoply of stars for the first time, realize that they’re not unique in the universe, and consequently burn everything down? (Scientists and other rational folk hide documents in a cave somewhere so that at least some small part of accumulated human knowledge is preserved.)

i don’t know that story. is there a way to bring down power structures without burning all human knowledge but what can be hastily hidden in a cave? maybe it’s not so wise to risk it. i’m more inclined to agree with what “anonymous” (commenter at Who is IOZ?) suggests. Perhaps it would simply be “Better to salvage what’s left of partying.”

Actually, the story in question is Issac Asimov’s classic “Nightfall”. (Wikipedia has an article on it..)
For my part, we need a housecleaning, not a burning. And I notice a lack of 18th century ‘gentleman’ who actually took the ideas of the Enlightenment seriously.
After anarchy, down here in rural Georgia it would look too much like Gilead in Margaret Atwood’s “The Handmaid’s Tale”..

(it’s a good thing there’s a Wikipedia article on Gilead, as i haven’t read “The Handmaid’s Tale,” either.) if you’re worried about religious zealots trying to rule your life like that one crazy character in every zombie movie, you can always make your way up north and join our agrarian commune of intellectual idlers. we’ll work part time for food and shelter, and sit around telling stories and playing music the rest of the time. and we’ll hire some Samurai to protect us from roving militaristic cults.

as benefactors of american “democracy” today, we are the roving-est fucking militaristic-est cult of all. is there a mode of housecleaning that will cripple the whole of MICFiC? maybe a housecleaning like on that program on one of the home channels that happen to be on most of the time in my house “Clean Sweep” where each week the characters go to an unfathomably messy house and convince the homeowners to sell all of their crap and simplify and organize their life, but the first half hour of the program consists of the convincing of the homeowners, and their reluctance to give up, say, the sentimental deer antlers that were buried in some corner under a heap of old newspapers, tv dinner trays, musical instruments, unused scrapbooking supplies and damp towels. so if you’ve seen the program, or one of it’s analogs, then you will know what i am talking about when i gleefully consider the exchange that the housecleaning we are talking about here might entail:

“what about this exploitive corporatist profit-centric economic machine? keep, sell or toss?” …
