We Should Do Something About the Blood on Our Hands

February 15, 2006

1. It was done in Our name. More snaps from Abu Ghraib — Gutless US media painfully silent about these photos.
2. Haiti’s Preval claims vote fraud, burned ballots found…hundreds and possibly thousands of burned and still smoldering ballots, many cast a week ago for Preval, were found on a Port-au-Prince garbage dump… — Burning ballots is so third-world! In America, when the results come out wrong, we simply don’t count the votes.
3. Supreme Court Justice Mishael Heshin defines the Palestinian Authority as an enemy state de factoHe rejected petitions to allow Palestinians married to Israelis to settle in Israel under the family reunification law as a loophole that would pose a risk to state security. . . . The judge said no one is preventing mixed couples from building a family, but they should live in Jenin. The right to life takes priority over any other consideration, he said.

I find it hard to comprehend the depth of depravity displayed in those photos. I consider myself as cynical and jaded as the next guy but…damn. I especially love the photo where one prisoner has “I’m A Rapist” written (or carved) on his thigh–with rapist spelled ‘Rapeist’. You should at least be able to correctly spell the slur!

It struck me as strange that the editors felt the need to black out the genitalia of the men being tortured in these photos. An odd inversion of morality – as if seeing someone’s dick could somehow be more damaging than seeing another human undergo the unthinkable.

Burning ballots? I totally agree. Just squint at them and say they’re “unreadable”. And really, letting them continue to smolder? Have they never heard of the magic of a shredder? Burn-sized pieces, folks!
