Random 11 – Volume 3

December 16, 2005

Ok, so I am giving in to the Friday Musical Audit; despite promises the last two weeks to the contrary and have again produced an almost entirely usless list of random songs and my own inane comments on them. It wasn’t my idea, we can blame that on Norbizness.

The premise?

Fire up the jukebox, don’t skip over anything, and take the first eleven that pop up.

Ok, simple enough. Here is the third Friday Musical Audit here at The Stump. [S’pose we can get Fehlleistungen to cook one up some Friday?]

[Press “more” for the list.]

  1. In My Time of Dying – Led Zeppelin – 9.5/10
OK, so either a Cure or a Zep song is going to come up on my list every time. Why is it that I’m just a little embarrassed when the Cure comes up, but not at all embarrassed about Zeppelin? Well because of songs like this that just fuckin’ rock. Jimmy Page plays the shit out of the guitar; with a slide. Page’s slide work still sounds like rock and roll, while, say, Duane Allman’s slide work, (which is technically great,) ends up sounding like country.
  2. The City is Mine – Jay-Z – 8.0/10
If it was possible to make the determination based solely upon the comparison between this song and the Glenn Frey song that this one borrows a few lines and melody from, then Jay-Z could kick Glenn Frey’s ass.
  3. Glide – Phish – 7.0/10
Wow, strong start so far! A Picture of Nectar: what a great album. (The album’s greatness is reflected in this song’s scoring. As it stands alone probably more like a 5/10 but I’m going to stand by my initial 7.0.) Wait, did Phish just call me a glide? WTF does that mean?
  4. The Crystal Lake – Grandaddy 4.5/10
A track off a mix tape CD I got free at the Sunglass Hut (something like that) five or six years back. There is much potential in the guitars and keyboards on this. Not crazy about the lyrics. Let me listen a few more times and maybe they’ll grow on me.
  5. Computer Blue – Prince – 9.0/10*
    Wendy?
    Yes Lisa
    Is the water warm enough?
    Yes Lisa
    Shall we begin?
    Yes Lisa
*Lesbian sexual tension in the intro: 10.0/10
    The song itself: 6.5/10
Giving the proper weight to each component, the score averages out to 9.0/10. For normal purposes, use 6.5/10.
  6. When I Said I Wanted to be Your Dog – Jens Lekman – 7.5/10
Mellow tune, neat lyrics, great title, strong contender.
  7. Grasp – Sevendust – 7.5/10
Sevendust is great on CD. I saw them live in a small venue and they didn’t get the sound set up good, but they seemed pretty competent live performers —other than the not sounding right. I was so surprised to meet lead singer Lejon Witherspoon mingling with the crowd before Sevendust went on that I didn’t notice that Johnny Damon (Red Sox CF) was right behind me.
  8. Honeychain – Throwing Muses – 7.0/10
Listening to music at random is weird! I am the type of music fan who enjoys listening to a great album as a whole. Throwing Muses The Real Ramona is a great album without a weak song on it. But this tune sounds out of place next to Sevendust. Go figure.
  9. Surprise, You’re Dead! – Faith No More – 9.0/10
    AHH-HAHAHAHA! Kicks Ass.
  10. No Weather – Stellastar – 8.5/10
This band would have been right at home in the 80’s/early 90’s, but they are just a good now-a-days. This is one of those great album tracks, but also works as a stand-alone.
  11. A Forest (Tree Mix) – The Cure – 8.5/10
The “Tree Mix” is good, but the original is a 10/10 and the greatest Cure song ever.

Bonus #12: I’m Amazed – Black Francis – very great song.

Holy-fuckin-shit. Average = 7.8/10 the tiny DJ inside my nonPod rules! (Even plugging in 6.5 for the Prince song only cuts the average to 7.6.) Was Your Generous Montag perhaps too generous with the scores this time?
