Re: Communications Alert

We recently learned of World of Opera host Lisa Simeone’s participation in an Occupy DC group. World of Opera is produced by WDAV, a music and arts station based in Davidson, North Carolina. The program is distributed by NPR. Lisa is not an employee of WDAV or NPR; she is a freelancer with the station.

We’re in conversations with WDAV about how they intend to handle this. We of course take this issue very seriously.

As a reminder, all public comment (including social media) on this matter is being managed by NPR Communications.

All media requests should be routed through NPR Communications at 202.513.2300 or mediarelations@npr.org. We will keep you updated as needed. Thanks. [via: Corrente]

Simeone has been fired.

    From NPR’s ethics code:

There will be instances where provisions of this code are not applicable to an outside contributor. For example, a freelancer who primarily does arts coverage, for example, may not in some situations be subject to the prohibition on making contributions to political campaigns. Such contributions, however, might limit the range of topics or individuals the outside contributor could cover. [NPR]

WE MUST NOT LET #OWS TAINT OUR OPERA PROGRAMMING!

      2. NPR journalists may not participate in marches and rallies involving causes or issues that NPR covers, nor should they sign petitions or otherwise lend their name to such causes, or contribute money to them. [NPR]

      Isn’t journalism a specific thing?

On a tangentially related topic, thank you, Montag, for speaking up for me at chez IOZ. One can’t please everyone, and it seems some of those people there are harder to please than others You know that I am a compassionate, intelligent, sincere person with a great deal of menschlichkeit – and I know you know that because I know you are one too. It hard out here for a sentient being. Someday our troubles will all be over.
